War Board Games
War games involve direct conflict and often require eliminating a certain amount of the enemy or fulfilling specific objectives to win. Dice are frequently used to simulate the chaos and uncertainty of combat, but cards can also be incorporated into fights. In addition to being used for resolving combat, modern war games often use cards to give players advantages such as faster movement or the ability to re-roll dice. There is also a style of game called Card Driven Games (CDGs) that uses cards as the primary way to interact with the game.

- Quartermaster General – Fast paced and easy to learn. Quartermaster General requires players to think carefully about how their armies will be supplied and plan carefully in order to win.

- Commands and Colors – This is a large family of games that covers Ancient Greece/Rome, Napoleonics, Samurai and much more. We suggest picking a period of history you enjoy and start there but if you are still unsure try Ancients. Use cards to give commands to your forces, roll dice to fight and eliminate your opponent. Fun blend of strategy and history.
- Axis & Allies – An iconic family of games focused on World War 2. Requires good planning and cunning tactics. Has a nice table presence with a great looking map and plastic units.
- Manoeuvre – Napoleonic era setting that allows players to command 1 of 8 different armies with each army having unique features. Plays quick and has lots of interesting choices to make.
Veteran
- War of the Ring – This is an epic two player fantasy themed game that recreates the fight for Middle-Earth. One player is the Free Peoples while the other commands the Shadow Armies. This game has loads of plastic pieces, a stunning looking map and exciting choices from start to finish. If you are more of a Hobbit fan, try Battle of Five Armies instead.
- Root – Players take on the role of a woodland nation to fight for control of a vast woodland. Aside from great looking art and components, Root also gives each woodland nation its own unique abilities and powers making each one truly unique. If you want loads of interaction between players, interesting rules and a fast playing game then Root is the perfect choice.
- Great Battles of History – This is a family of traditional chit and hex games published by GMT Games. The line covers a range of time periods and cultures, from Alexander the Great to Tokugawa Ieyasu & Ishida Mitsunari’s battle at Sekigahara with lots more in between. If you are looking for a game that is deeply historical and simulates history, then this line of excellent games will have something for you.
